The art of crafting
At the J.L. Møller factory, every stage of production serves a precise purpose, combining solid craftsmanship, rigorous method, and carefully applied technology. Skilled cabinetmakers and modern machineries work together to create lasting design pieces, preserving our aesthetic legacy.

J.L. Møller is synonymous with timeless design and handcrafted furniture, made to last for generations. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted using only the finest solid wood and premium materials to ensure both beauty and durability. Based in Aarhus, our factory is dedicated to preserving the traditions of Danish craftsmanship while integrating cutting-edge machineries. Every step of production is carried out in-house, from selecting the raw materials to cutting, assembling, sanding, polishing, upholstery and weaving, ensuring the highest quality at every stage. With our roots in the visionary design and manufacturing principles of Niels Otto Møller, we proudly continue to honour the legacy of 100% Danish manufacturing - an exceptional commitment that defines our company's mission and sets our designs apart as timeless and unique masterpieces.

Wood Cutting
Each plank begins its transformation at the marking stage, where a skilled craftsman determines how it will be used. Every component of a given model is outlined during this phase, based on the wood’s characteristics and the design requirements. The artisan also works to maximize material efficiency, minimizing waste as much as possible. A long-standing piece of equipment, the band saw, remains essential to this process — its precise cuts help translate design specifications into workable parts, combining accuracy with craftsmanship.
Steam Bending
Wood Cutting
Elevated steam temperatures effectively reshape solid wood into refined chair backs. Under these conditions, a plank measuring around 23 inches in length and nearly 3 inches in thickness becomes pliable, allowing for the creation of graceful curves. The wood then undergoes a careful series of several processes within iron molds to achieve the desired curvature and moisture content. The expertise of the craftsman is essential throughout, ensuring the final backrests are both ergonomic and resilient.

Lathe Machine
With a history spanning more than fifty years, the lathe machine has played a crucial role in our production process, reflecting the shift from woodcarving to modeling. By employing solid cast bronze models that weigh between 10-30 kg, these machines carve and shape the wood, transforming rough pieces into the elegant and refined shapes that define the Møller collection.
Assembling
Our production process relies on two essential tools: a brush and a specialized wood glue, both used since the company’s early days. Following Niels Otto Møller’s philosophy, it’s always better to use too much glue than too little—because lasting quality starts with strong foundations. Traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery connects backrests and rails, and heated dowels expand upon contact with the glue, creating secure bonds. Thanks to the exceptional strength of these joints, our chairs do not require stretchers between the legs for structural support. This results in a cleaner, more streamlined silhouette — delivering a chair that is both elegant and built to last for generations.

Sanding
Achieving the refined aesthetic of a Møller chair starts with a clear design philosophy: eliminate anything unnecessary and focus only on what truly matters. This principle is reflected in every joint and surface. The beauty of each chair comes from the precision of its construction—especially in the joints, where components meet seamlessly through sanding and filing. Rough surfaces are smoothed by hand using sanding blocks and mechanical sanders, ensuring the final finish is clean and consistent.
Weaving
Hours are spent on the chair weaving process, with up to seven hours dedicated to creating the longest bench in the collection. During this time, following traditional plane weaving techniques, hundreds of meters of recycled paper cord are woven onto the frame of the chair, forming a geometric pattern of intersections and overlaps that embodies style, durability, and elegance.

Upholstery
After selecting upholstery from a range of premium leather and fabric options, our skilled upholsterers take over with outstanding precision. The key to our chairs’ exceptional comfort lies in the upholstery technique: instead of a plywood core, webbing and foam are tightly wrapped directly around the rails with controlled strength and finesse. This approach creates a seat that is both beautifully tailored and upholstered to provide lasting support, setting our chairs apart in quality and comfort.
Quality control
Before leaving our factory, each product undergoes a rigorous inspection to ensure every detail aligns with our exacting quality standards. From the initial cutting of the wood to the final stages of weaving and upholstery, our dedicated team is involved in every step of the manufacturing process. With all stages of production housed under one roof, we maintain full control over quality and uphold our commitment to excellence.
