Production
Since 1944, J. L. Møllers Møbelfabrik has produced chairs of outstandingly high quality in timeless designs.
The chairs are sold over the whole world and the Møller chair has become the epitome of Danish Design.
What is it that makes J.L. Møller chairs so unique?
Selection of materials
We select the raw wood ourselves using very strict quality requirements. Oak from Spessart in Southern Germany, beech from Denmark, maple from Belgium, cherry from USA, teak and palisander from Asia. For decades now, our suppliers have been aware that only the best quality is acceptable for the fabrication of J.L. Møller's chairs. The wood is sent to the factory – in full size – as unedged sawn timber, and is there sorted and cut by our own personnel. At J.L. Møller the second-best is discarded – only the best is accepted.
Production without assembly line
Chairs from J.L. Møller are assembled using the old craft traditions. As far as possible no modern technology or assembly lines are used. Each employee is a specialist in specific work processes for creating the chair, giving it a unique quality and elegance.
At J.L. Møller tenons, mortices and dowels are all glued by hand. This is the only way to ensure that all surfaces have been treated. Dowels are dried down to 5% humidity (in the other components this is 8%), so that when the dowel contacts the glue it expands and is immoveably fixed in position. The chair’s tenon construction also strengthens the chair.
Cramping is performed with compressed air in a hydraulic press.
Polishing machines are not used for the final polish, as they treat all wood alike. Instead the chairs are polished by hand. This is J.L. Møller's policy in all production phases. If the latest technology does not give a better and more satisfactory result than the well-known craft methods, it is quite simply not employed in the factory.
Upholstery
The chairs are upholstered with polyurethane foam, which does not flatten or become warm, and is attached directly to the individual chair. On the classic models designed by N.O. Møller the chairs are not fitted with a prefabricated seat. On these chairs the upholstery is tacked on all the way round, and the tacks are finally covered with edging strip to give the optimum finish.
Woven
In addition to leather or textile-covered seats, most models are available with a hand-woven seat. These are woven with 130 metres of impregnated wicker. This gives the seat optimum durability and makes it easy to clean. The paper wicker is available in natural or black.
Leather
It’s not just the wood which has to pass the examiner's eye. The same goes for leather too.
In fact, making the seat of a Møller chair takes up a whole quarter of an ox-hide, because the marks and scratches – which occurred when the beast rubbed up against a fence or such like – are discarded at an early point in the production process.
Finish
J.L. Møller supplies its models with different finishes: varnished, soap-treated or oiled.
The result
When the chairs leave the factory they are dispatched FULLY ASSEMBLED. Not as knock-down furniture in a box. This costs more in transport, but at J.L. Møller our view is that what can be assembled by the recipient can also be accidentally disassembled by the consumer. It is literally impossible to pull a Møller chair apart. Before packing, our chairs undergo a final inspection, where everything is checked one last time before they are packed and sent off.
